DUNCAN — A 16-year-old charged as an adult in the fatal stabbing of a Duncan girl has been found competent to stand trial on a first-degree murder charge.
Stephens County Special District Judge Jerry Herberger ruled Thursday that Michael Anthony Ray was mentally fit to stand trial for the death of 14-year-old Alyssa Wiles. Herberger scheduled an Oct. 7 preliminary hearing and granted a defense request to seal the mental evaluation report.
Authorities say Alyssa was stabbed to death with a kitchen knife in her home.
A local newspaper reports that Ray didn't speak at Thursday's hearing. His attorney, Jim Berry, says the defense team is still reviewing discovery material from prosecutors and that they'll know more after next month's preliminary hearing.
