The No. 10 spot in the Class 5A rankings is there for the taking. But through two weeks, no team seems to be able to put the clamps on it.
McGuinness, with several turnovers in two losses to ranked 5A opponents, holds the spot this week, and will have opportunities in the coming weeks to prove it still deserves to stay in the top 10.
Ardmore has perhaps the most impressive win of the other candidates for the 10th spot, defeating Class 4A No. 6 Ada in the opening week. But Ardmore suffered an upset loss to Durant on Friday. Durant’s case took a hit with its Week 1 loss to unranked 4A opponent Poteau. Duncan lost a chance for a potential strong victory when weather wiped out its game against Weatherford.
Noble is the only unbeaten but unranked team in 5A, yet wins over Tecumseh and Western Heights aren’t enough to push the Bears into the 10th spot just yet.
Claremore jumped into the top 10 this week, taking the spot of Tulsa East Central, which clearly has some defensive holes to fill after graduating some stars from last year’s state runner-up squad. And McAlester dropped a few spots after blowing a lead against Tulsa Washington — a 6A team that was coming off a loss to 4A Douglass a week earlier.
