“The Watsons Go To Birmingham,” starring Anika Noni Rose and Wood Harris premieres at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 on Hallmark Channel.
Details on the film, provided by the network, are as follows:
Hallmark Channel is proud to present a production of historical fiction that boasts a superlative pedigree. “The Watsons Go To Birmingham,” an Original Movie World Premiere, was adapted from the book, The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963, that earned author Christopher Paul Curtis the prestigious 1996 Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King Honor Award. The film tells the story of an African American family from Flint, Michigan that found their lives forever changed during a road trip to Birmingham, Alabama in the Summer of ’63. The film stars Tony Award winner and Grammy Award nominee Anika Noni Rose (“The Good Wife,” “Dreamgirls,” “The Princess and the Frog”) and Wood Harris (“The Wire,” “Remember the Titans”) as Wilona and Daniel Watson, the parents to three kids: 15-year-old delinquent Byron (Harrison Knight), 11-year-old nerd Kenny (Bryce Clyde Jenkins) and sweet eight-year-old Joetta (Skai Jackson). When Byron proves to be too much of a handful, the parents decide to hit the road for Birmingham and some discipline from Grandma Sands (LaTanya Richardson Jackson). But the Watsons find far more than they could ever have imagined on their summer vacation, landing in the heart of the South during the historic tumult of the civil rights movement. The Watson family serves as the prism through which the audience views a moment of revolutionary change in America. Three-time Tony and Grammy Award nominee David Alan Grier (“Porgy and Bess,” “PEEPLES,” “In Living Color”) also co-stars as Grandma Sands’ good friend Mr. Robert, adding even greater weight to an already magnificent production. With “The Watsons Go To Birmingham,” Hallmark brings to the small screen a substantial work of genuine importance upon the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights movement this year.
