A Nebraska man walking along Interstate 35 early Saturday morning was struck by a Logan County sheriff's department vehicle.

Danny Lundy, 46, of Nemaha, Neb., died at the scene about 12:30 a.m., the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. Lundy was driving north on the highway when something fell out of the back of the pickup. He was walking across the roadway looking for the missing item when he was struck, troopers said.

Deputy Mark Hanneman, 48, of Edmond, was driving the sheriff's vehicle.

Chief Deputy Richard Stephens said Hanneman was responding to a report a vehicle headed the wrong direction on the northbound side of the interstate.

Stephens said the vehicle's headlights were shining into oncoming traffic, and when the deputy arrived, he was unable to see the pedestrian because the headlights were shining into his eyes.

Hanneman was taken to an Edmond hospital, where he was treated and release for broken ribs and collarbone and glass fragments in his face and eyes, Stephens said.

Lundy had been helping relatives in Kingfisher move, Stephens said. Lundy was driving back to Nebraska when moving supplies fell out of the back of the pickup. Another person was driving the truck south in the highway median, and they were using the headlights to search for the fallen items when the deputy arrived, Stephens said. has disabled the comments for this article.
