El Reno had a flair for the dramatic Friday night in a 35-34 overtime win against Noble, giving first-year coach Taylor Schwerdtfeger his first win as a head coach.
The Indians opened overtime with senior Justin Brown scoring on the first play from the 10, only to watch the Bears score with a chance to tie the game with the extra point. However, they missed the kick, sending El Reno into a frenzy.
“I've been really fortunate to be a part of some big wins, having been at Kingfisher,” said Schwerdtfeger, who was an assistant for the Yellowjackets for five years. “This one as a first as a head coach you'll never forget it, especially in the fashion that we won it in.”
Schwerdtfeger had to change the Indians' offense this week after losing quarterback Cal Baker to a season-ending knee injury last week.
Brown really benefitted as he rushed for 220 yards, leaving some confidence in the offense had the game continued.
“I felt like obviously with us scoring on our first play and the success we had on the ground with Justin Brown, I felt pretty good about the overtime,” Schwerdtfeger said. “But them missing the extra point made it a little sweeter for us.”
El Reno hosts McGuinness on Friday to open district play.
FOX'S SHERRARD OK AFTER SCARE
Fox senior lineman Dakota Sherrard is OK after a scary moment in Friday's 52-38 loss against Alex.
Sherrard was airlifted to OU Medical Center because of a pre-existing heart condition, Fox coach Rick Phelps said. Tests, though, came back normal Friday night and Sherrard was released from the hospital.
“He's kind of experienced it before, but not to the same extent,” Phelps said. “During scrimmages it gave him some problems. It started last year, but not during the season. I don't know what triggered it.”
Phelps said Sherrard will visit his normal doctor on Monday. Phelps was relieved after hearing the results of the initial tests.
“It's positive as far as I know,” he said. “It wasn't head or neck or anything like that.”
