Oklahoma football: What's it like to lose to Notre Dame?

Our second OU-Notre Dame video has arrived, and today’s installment is something the Sooners know all too well. What’s it like to lose to Notre Dame?

Videographers Damon Fontenot and Tim Money have produced a set of four videos on the OU-Notre Dame series, which is interesting for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which is the Fighting Irish’s dominance in the rivalry. OU is 1-9 all-time against Notre Dame.

And what’s interesting is that OU didn’t necessarily run into epic Notre Dame teams all the time. Sure, Notre Dame was great in 1966 (9-0-1, national champion) and great in 2012 (12-1, played for the national championship) and great in 1953 (9-0-1).

But the Irish also beat OU in 1999, when Notre Dame finished 5-6, and 1957, when the Irish finished 6-4, and 1961 and 1962, years in which Notre Dame was 5-5.

And while the Sooners had some bad timing — no Barry Switzer team ever played against Notre Dame; the 1961 Sooners were just 5-5 — they also caught Notre Dame in some great OU seasons. The Sooners went 10-0 and 10-1, respectively, in 1956 and 1957. They made the Orange Bowl in 1962. OU went 8-1-1 in 1952 and 9-1-1 in 1953. So that’s three seasons in which Notre Dame pinned the lone loss on Oklahoma.

Here are the 10 OU-Notre Dame meetings, with the final score and each team’s final record:

1952: Notre Dame 27-21 (OU 8-1-1, Notre Dame 7-2-1).

1953: Notre Dame 28-21 (OU 9-1-1, Notre Dame 9-0-1).

1956: Oklahoma 40-0 (OU 10-0, Notre Dame 2-8).

1957: Notre Dame 7-0 (OU 10-1, Notre Dame 7-3).

1961: Notre Dame 19-6 (OU 5-5, Notre Dame 5-5).

1962: Notre Dame 13-7 (OU 8-3, Notre Dame 5-5).

1966: Notre Dame 38-0 (OU 6-4, Notre Dame 10-0-1).

1968: Notre Dame 45-21 (OU 7-4, Notre Dame 7-2-1).

1999: Notre Dame 34-30 (OU 7-5, Notre Dame 5-6).

2012: Notre Dame 30-13 (OU 10-3, Notre Dame 12-1).
