LAWTON — A jury in Comanche County has convicted a Lawton inmate of first-degree murder in the killing of a fellow inmate at the GEO prison.

Jurors deliberated about 90 minutes Wednesday before convicting 35-year-old Jose Garcia in the 2012 beating and stabbing death of 25-year-old Sonny Limpy. Garcia was also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.

Prosecutors alleged that Garcia was one of six inmates who attacked Limpy in a gang-related dispute. But Garcia's defense attorney, Silas Lymans, told jurors that his client was acting as a “soldier” for the gang and that he didn't have a choice but to participate in the attack.

A local newspaper reports that jurors recommended the maximum sentence for Garcia: life in prison without parole.
