NORMAN — Internet rumors began swirling Saturday morning regarding the health of Cindy Johnson, wife of Oklahoma director of football operations Merv Johnson.
Contrary to the rumors, Cindy has not died, but has been removed from life support and probably has only a couple days left, Merv Johnson told The Oklahoman.
Merv Johnson has been on the Sooner football staff since joining as an assistant coach in 1979, and assumed his current position — which also includes color commentary on OU radio broadcasts — in 1998.
Despite his wife’s failing health, Merv Johnson was at the football stadium a couple hours before the Sooners’ Saturday evening home game against TCU, so he apparently will work the game as he usually does with play-by-play announcer Toby Rowland.
Rowland and Johnson are joined on gamedays by sideline reporters Chris Plank, Dusty Dvoracek and Teddy Lehman. According to an OU source, if Johnson would’ve missed the game, Dvoracek would’ve replaced him in the booth Saturday night.
