Oklahoma State football: Shaun Lewis comes up big again for Cowboys defense

On a day that was filled with impact plays from the Oklahoma State defense, linebacker Shaun Lewis came up with some of the biggest. He led the Cowboys with eight tackles, tallied a forced fumble and fumble recovery, intercepted a pass that set up the Cowboys' final field goal and made a huge shoestring tackle in the open field on Kansas State quarterback Daniel Sams as the Wildcats attempted to rally on their last drive.

Coach Mike Gundy called your tackle on Sams maybe the biggest play of the game. Were you focusing on Sams on that play?

“Our coach emphasized that all week. The opportunity presented itself to make a play, so I just had to lay out for my team. That's big-time. Right before we went on the field, we said, ‘Don't wait for somebody else to make the play. You make the play.'

Were you surprised to see that much of Sams? He had thrown just four passes coming into this game.

“Our coaches did a good job of preparing us for either (Sams or other quarterback Jake Waters). We had heard throughout the week that they were trying to line (Sams) up at different places, to get the ball in his hands more often. So we just prepared ourselves for anything.”

What did you see on your interception?

“I was just supposed to help out Shamiel (Gary) on that play, and (Sams) ended up underthrowing it. The chance presented itself to make a play, and I just tried to capitalize on that.”
