Vegas oddsmakers still project the Thunder as Western Conference playoff favorites

by Anthony Slater Published: October 7, 2013

If Russell Westbrook returns within the expected timetable, he should miss around 20 games, leading some to predict that’ll only cost the Thunder a couple games in the regular-season standings.

But Vegas seems to disagree with that assessment. At least, that’s what the early odds indicate. Handicappers, maybe more than most, seem wary of Westbrook’s early absence and how it will affect the Thunder.

For proof, check out these projected Western Conference regular-season standings, from SportsBook, sorted by the recently released over/under win totals:

1. Los Angeles Clippers – O/U 56.5
2.
San Antonio Spurs – O/U 55.5
3.
Houston Rockets – O/U 55
4. Oklahoma City Thunder – O/U 52.5
5.
Golden State Warriors – O/U 50.5
6.
Memphis Grizzlies – O/U 49.5
7.
Denver Nuggets – O/U 46.5
8.
Dallas Mavericks – O/U 44.5
9.
Minnesota Timberwolves – O/U 41.5
10.
New Orleans Pelicans – O/U 40.5
11.
Portland Trail Blazers – O/U 38.5
12.
Los Angeles Lakers – O/U 34.5
13.
Sacramento Kings – O/U 32.5
14.
Utah Jazz – O/U 27.5
15.
Phoenix Suns – O/U 21.5

All things considered, that seems like a relatively low projection for Kevin Durant and the Thunder. It’s nearly eight games off last year’s 60-win pace and puts them closer to the fifth-seeded Warriors than any of the top three seeds.

But despite that, Vegas isn’t down on the Thunder this season. Instead, that low projection seems to hint at a heavy respect from oddsmakers toward OKC’s All-Star point guard.

Because take a look at their current odds to win the Western Conference title (shown below, also from SportsBook). With Westbrook expected back in the playoffs, the Thunder ascend to the top spot, while the rest of the league’s contenders remain in similar standing:

1. Oklahoma City Thunder – 11/4 odds
2. Los Angeles Clippers – 4/1 odds
3.
San Antonio Spurs – 9/2 odds
4.
Houston Rockets – 11/2 odds
5.
Golden State Warriors – 13/1 odds
6.
Memphis Grizzlies – 15/1 odds
7.
Dallas Mavericks – 15/1 odds
8.
Denver Nuggets – 22/1 odds
9.
Los Angeles Lakers – 35/1 odds
10. Minnesota Timberwolves – 50/1 odds
11.
New Orleans Pelicans – 50/1 odds
12.
Portland Trail Blazers – 65/1 odds
13.
Sacramento Kings – 90/1 odds
14.
Utah Jazz – 90/1 odds
15.
Phoenix Suns – 250/1 odds

Interesting numbers, if you’re into that sort of thing.
