The Oklahoman's Class C rankings: Picking the top 10 a challenge

by Scott Wright Published: October 7, 2013

Each week, it seems to get a little tougher to put the Class C top 10 together.

The biggest problem is the inequality in scheduling. The class is full of teams with mediocre records that have played incredibly tough schedules, and teams with good records against weak schedules.

Geography plays as much of a factor as anything, with the small schools being spread across the state, so you can’t blame a team that can only get a certain level of opponent on the schedule. But it makes the job of ranking those teams and comparing them to each other more difficult by the week.

There was one significant change in this week’s poll, with Arkoma stepping in at No. 10 and bumping Webbers Falls out.

Webbers Falls lost 46-16 to No. 4 Thackerville, which is by no means a punishable loss. But on the whole, Arkoma’s 3-2 record right now looks stronger than the 3-2 record of Webbers Falls. Arkoma has losses to Class B Keota (which is on the fringe of the rankings in that class) and No. 9 Maud in a one-point game. Arkoma also has a win over Sasakwa, which was undefeated at the time and still stands at 4-1. Webbers Falls’ wins aren’t quite as strong.

And there are still other teams — some with worse records — right on the edge trying to break through. Deer Creek-Lamont is 1-3 but all three losses are to highly ranked Class B and C teams. Corn Bible is 2-3, but has also put together a a solid resume. One-loss teams like Sasakwa and Grandfield are hanging around out there, too.

So there’s certainly potential for some big shake-ups in the bottom portion of The Oklahoman’s Class C rankings, but for how, here’s how it stands:

Rank, Team, Record (Prev.)
1. Tipton, 5-0 (1)
2. Cherokee, 4-0 (2)
3. Sharon-Mutual, 5-0 (3)
4. Thackerville, 4-0 (4)
5. Balko, 5-0 (5)
6. Bluejacket, 4-1 (6)
7. Shattuck, 4-1 (7)
8. Timberlake, 3-2 (10)
9. Maud, 3-2 (8)
10. Arkoma, 3-2 (NR)
Dropped out: Webbers Falls, 3-2 (9)
