Wellston picked up its first victory of the season Friday, routing Drumright 34-6, and in the process enjoyed its best game since the 2005 season.
The Tigers have not had much success since going 7-4 in 2005, winning just six games leading up to this season.
But Friday’s was the first victory Wellston has held an opponent to six or less points since beating Maysville 28-6 on Oct. 7, 2005. It’s also the first time the Tigers have won by 28 or more points since beating Drumright 37-7 on Nov. 4, 2005.
“We’ve got a bunch of kids that had been injured and we got several of them back this week, so that helped us out,” Wellston coach Fred Peery said.
The Tigers were dominant on the ground, too. They rushed for 204 yards with quarterback Jacob Harriet rushing for 120 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Colton Ebers also rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
Wellston (1-4, 0-1 District 2A-5) travels to Mounds this week.
