In the least surprising change of the week, there’s a new No. 1 in Class 5A.
With its 28-21 win at Carl Albert, Guthrie overtakes the top spot. Guthrie is the only undefeated team in Class 5A, and has been since Week 3. But now the Bluejays finally have that big statement victory that they previously lacked.
With the loss, Carl Albert falls to No. 3, which was a difficult decision, because it’s tough weighing Carl Albert’s 4-2 record against McAlester’s 5-1 mark.
Carl Albert’s schedule has been a little tougher, but the notable games for each are fairly comparable — with the exception of Carl Albert’s loss to Guthrie. McAlester has wins over two top-10 teams in 5A, Claremore and Shawnee. Carl Albert has wins over No. 5 Deer Creek and McGuinness, which isn’t far outside the top 10. And both teams have losses to solid 6A programs that would be ranked in the top 15 of that class, McAlester to Tulsa Washington and Carl Albert to Southmoore.
With two teams so closely matched, the decision had to come down to the simplest factor — record.
No changes to the rest of the poll, with wins across the board from 4-10. Shawnee and Tulsa Kelley square off in the biggest game of the week for 5A Thursday night.
