Big 12 football: Bob Stoops' record as double-digit favorite dips below .900

OU was a two-touchdown favorite over Texas last Saturday. Anywhere from 12 to 14 points. And the Sooners lost 36-20.

How rare is that for the Sooners to lose as double-digit favorites? OU fan Michael Phillips of Dallas has run the numbers. And they’re very interesting.

Bob Stoops has been a double-digit favorite 122 times. He’s 109-13. I don’t know if that sounds good or sounds bad, but it’s not particularly impressive when compared to other coaches. The loss to Texas dipped Stoops’ winning percentage as a double-digit favorite to below .900, .893.

Phillips has run the numbers for a variety of coaches. Here they are:

Mike Gundy is 37-5 as a double-digit favorite, a winning percentage of .881. That’s actually a little below Stoops’ .893.

Les Miles is 73-0. That’s right. Miles is unbeaten as a double-digit favorite, at both LSU and OSU.

Urban Meyer is 76-3 at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State. That’s a percentage of .962.

Nick Saban is 82-5, .943, at Michigan State, LSU and Alabama.

Mack Brown is 108-7, .939, at Texas.

Steve Spurrier is 109-8, .932, at Florida and South Carolina.

Bill Snyder is 89-8, .918, at Kansas State.

Frank Beamer is 118-15, .887, at Virginia Tech.

Kirk Ferentz is 44-10, .815, at Iowa. Which is interesting in itself. Ferentz in 15 years with the Hawkeyes has been a double-digit favorite less than half as often as has Stoops in 15 years.

Here are Stoops’ losses as a double-digit favorite:

1999: at Texas Tech (13 points) L 38-28

2001: OSU (27 points) L 16-13

2002: at Texas A&M (10 points) L 30-26

2002: at OSU (15 points) L 38-28

2003: Kansas State at Kansas City (14 points) L 35-7

2005: TCU (25 points) L 17-10

2007: at Colorado (23 points) L 27-24

2009: Brigham Young at Arlington (22 1/2 points) L 14-13

2011: Texas Tech (28 1/2 points) L 41-34

2011: at Baylor (15 1/2 points) L 45-38

2012: Kansas State (16 points) L 24-19

2012: Notre Dame (12 1/2 points) L 30-13

2013: Texas (13 1/2 points) L 36-20

Here are Gundy’s losses as a double-digit favorite:

2007: at Troy (10 1/2 points) L 41-23

2009: Houston (15 1/2 points) L 45-35

2011: at Iowa State (27 1/2 points) L 37-31, OT

2012: at Arizona (10 1/2 points) L 59-38

2013: at West Virginia (18 points) L 30-21
