Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops: Texas game plan 'wasn't great,' but on-field performance ultimately decided game

NORMAN — Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said after Monday’s practice that Saturday was “a bad day for everyone,” involved in the Sooners’ 36-20 loss to Texas.

“It was a collection of missed assignments and being out-executed, is really what it gets down to,” Stoops said. “Certainly not being able to get off the field on third down and playing 82 or 85 snaps or whatever is too many for us.

“The game plan wasn’t great, our execution wasn’t great, third down wasn’t great. There’s nothing real positive. The kids played hard but we were just off. They were one step ahead of us all day. … You get frustrated and there weren’t any good calls Saturday and it tells you we just weren’t good enough.”

After Stoops’ admission that the game plan wasn’t as good as it needed to be, he was asked what he wishes he’d done different schematically.

“I’m not going to get into that,” he responded. “It just wasn’t good enough. What we didn’t wasn’t good enough anywhere, whether it was first down, second down or third down, there was nothing that was real good. That tells you we were a little off in our game plan.”

Stoops said there aren’t any “magical calls” that would’ve corrected the Sooners’ third-down woes, though, and that it ultimately comes down to players executing.

“It’s about how your players play and how the other team attacks you as well,” Stoops said. “You’ve got to try and scheme things, and we thought we had a good plan but they made all the plays. That happens and that’s to their credit.”
