Fall Makeover Series: Stepping it up a notch

Meet Robert…

There was no doubt that Robert had a great career in the banking arena. Having worked for a major Fortune 100 banking institution since 1997, he had the history and track record to show he knew customer service inside and out. Having returned to school to complete a degree in Financial Management, Robert wanted to segue into the finance arena, and was entertaining positions as a financial and business analyst.


The original approach…

Robert had developed a three-page résumé which was simply a compilation of a handful of bullet points presented under each of his five positions. After exploring his experience, Robert had presented quite a hefty education section with his tenure at three universities; his most recent, of course, being the degree-granting institution. Underneath professional experience and education, Robert had developed a section titled, “Skills & Notables” which contained a laundry list of 14 additional highlights ranging from the skills he possessed to his extracurricular involvement in high school.


The new approach…

There was no doubt that Robert was a strong performer, and that he had a stellar career to present within the customer service arena, but as this was not the area in which Robert wanted to continue to contribute, a more transferable picture had to be developed.


To do this, I created a much more aesthetically pleasing résumé. While Robert was pursuing an analytical field, his résumé still needed to appeal to a varied audience, so it needed to reflect a conservative yet progressive look. A new qualifications summary was developed showcasing the transferability of Robert’s experience and the value of his education. Through selective formatting—bold, all caps, italics, and color choices—emphasis was placed on select sections to pull the reader’s attention to the most important evaluation areas. Under a section titled “Candidacy Highlights,” I included noun phrases summarizing Robert’s (1) Experience, (2) Coursework, and (3) Skills. This provided a snapshot of who Robert was through experience and training.
