Norman North quarterback and Alabama commit David Cornwell is finished for the season after the knee injury he suffered in a game Oct. 3 at Yukon, Timberwolves coach Wade Standley confirmed to The Oklahoman Wednesday night.

As initially reported by, Cornwell underwent knee surgery last week to repair the injury, which he did not provide details of. He is expected to enroll at Alabama for the spring semester and told the website he expects to be healthy in time to compete for the quarterback job that will be vacated by fifth-year senior A.J. McCarron after the season.

Cornwell, one of the top-rated pocket passers in the 2014 recruiting class, injured his right knee during a scramble for a loose ball after his punt was blocked late in the first half against Yukon. He was replaced by 6-foot-4 junior John Kolar, who led the Timberwolves to the come-from-behind victory, as well as a 54-0 win over U.S. Grant last week.

Currently unbeaten in District 6A-3, the Timberwolves have their two most important remaining regular-season games the next two weeks, at Edmond North Friday and vs. Putnam City North the week after.
