Edmond Santa Fe quarterback Justice Hansen will not play Friday against Norman, Santa Fe coach Lance Manning told The Oklahoman.

Hansen, who is verbally committed to Oklahoma, suffered a high ankle sprain during last week’s 50-33 loss to Lawton. He is still in a walking boot and is experiencing soreness.

“You’ve got to get him out of that boot and rehab,” Manning said. “He’s not playing this week. We’ve just got to take it week to week.”

As a result, sophomore quarterback Keaton Torre will make his first start at the varsity level. Last week he threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns in the Wolves’ best offensive output of the season. But he also threw three interceptions, showing his youth.

Entering Friday knowing he is the starter, though, could be beneficial.

“He’s the guy,” Manning said. “All the reps go to him. It’s a matter of preparing for it all week and getting all the reps in practice, and I think that makes a big difference.

“He’s very talented, a very smart kid, he made a couple mistakes that we’d rather him not make, but we’ll get those corrected.”

Santa Fe, ranked No. 6, is 5-2 on the season, with both losses coming without Hansen on the field. Both Hansen and Torre missed the season-opening 3-0 loss to Midwest City. Hansen had a strained hamstring, while Torre was recovering from minor knee surgery.

The Wolves did get some good news this week, though. Senior defensive end Michael Onwuchuruba will play Friday after missing the past two games with an illness.

The status for Hansen next week against Edmond Memorial remains uncertain.

“I wish I could tell you. I don’t know,” Manning said. “I’d love to say, ‘Oh yeah,’ but I don’t think anybody can give you an answer on that right now. We need to get rid of the soreness and stuff, and get it rehabbed. Now it’s just kind of taken a turn to where it’s just stayed sore.

“We know what’s wrong. There’s no fractures or anything, it’s just a sore injury. It’s an injury you just can’t jump back on it. We’re just going to have to wait and hopefully he’ll show improvement soon.”
