NORMAN — Oklahoma redshirt freshman running back Daniel Brooks was cited and released early Monday morning after a complaint of misdemeanor assault and battery, according to a Norman Police Department incident report.

The alleged incident occurred at 1:45 a.m. Monday morning at 753 Asp Ave., on Campus Corner.

Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said he couldn’t provide more details about the case because it was assigned to mediation, meaning criminal charges haven’t been filed and the parties are seeking to settle the dispute out of court.

An OU spokesman said coach Bob Stoops is aware of the situation, and that it will be handled internally.

Brooks, from Port Lavaca, Texas, was a three-star prospect when he signed with Oklahoma in the recruiting class of 2012.

He tore his ACL during a track meet two months after signing with the Sooners, but still arrived on campus and redshirted last season. Brooks began his college career at running back, but moved to defensive back — and is still listed as a DB on the team’s official online roster — although Stoops said last month that Brooks was playing running back again.

“Daniel’s been doing really well,” Stoops said then. “Mostly on scout team right now, but he works hard and he’s a great, great worker.

“He makes good cuts and he’s got some of his speed back and he’s doing a nice job.”
