NORMAN — Oklahoma center Ty Darlington has been informed that he is not eligible for a redshirt season despite barely playing in 2013, and will be classified as a junior next season, according to a source close to Darlington.
Darlington was active for nine plays in the season opener against Louisiana-Monroe, then played a few snaps on special teams in wins over Notre Dame and Texas Tech.
Darlington appeared in nine games as a true freshman in 2012, starting for an injured Gabe Ikard in Oklahoma’s home win over Baylor that year. He is expected to replace Ikard as the Sooners’ starting center in 2014.
OU coach Bob Stoops was asked the day after the Sugar Bowl if Darlington had been able to redshirt in 2013, and the coach said, “I’m not sure.”
