During Wednesday night's game against Minnesota, Kevin Durant had inscribed a Sharpie message on his sneakers.
Durant declined to talk about the exact meaning of the message postgame, saying he'd “rather keep that between my family,” but it seemed to be a tribute to somebody he had recently lost that was close to him.
Earlier on Wednesday, Durant posted a photo to Instagram of what seemed to be a family friend from back home.
With it, Durant wrote, in part: “Damn bro, I just seen you at the Wizards game, we chopped it up laughed had a good time … You always had my back. Even when I was a kid, at 9 years old, you was always so cool and gracious to me … Rest in Paradise big homie!”
TULSA RESCHEDULES GAME IN OKC
Because of the inclement weather on Tuesday morning, the Tulsa 66ers Field Trip Day game in Oklahoma City was sparsely attended.
Many of the schools that were scheduled to bring children had cancellations. More than 12,000 people were expected but only about 1,500 were able to make it.
But to accommodate those that weren't able to attend, the team has announced a second game — scheduled for March 11 at 11 a.m. against the Los Angeles Defenders in Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Unused tickets from Tuesday's game will be honored for this contest.
KD WINS PLAYER OF THE MONTH AGAIN
Durant won Player of the Month in November, then had a better December.
He won Player of the Month in December, then had a better January.
And on Wednesday, Durant made it three straight, winning Player of the Month in January. But it's tough to see him outdoing this most recent 31-day stretch.
In 16 January games, Durant averaged career-bests in both points (35.9) and assists (6.1) for a calendar month. He scored 30 or more points 13 times, 40 or more five times and had a career-high 54-point game against Golden State.
Without Russell Westbrook, he spearheaded a 13-4 month for the Thunder.
Kendrick Perkins talking about Steven Adams' toughness, while also expressing his displeasure for flopping: “Some people just take a hit and keep going, some people take a hit and fall and roll over on the floor, take acting classes. He's not one of those guys.”
STAT OF THE NIGHT
Durant has compiled at least 25 points and at least four assists in 16 straight games. Per Elias, that ties Michael Jordan for the longest streak in the past 40 seasons.
OKC heads back out on the road for a 6 p.m. Friday game in Orlando, before returning home for a noon Sunday game against the Knicks. The two Eastern Conference teams have a combined record of 32-66.
