Before OSU’s 77-61 win over Kansas State Monday night, Markel Brown, Marcus Smart and Mason Cox were recognized on Senior Night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Brown and Cox are seniors. While Smart is only a sophomore, he was saluted, too, having already announced he’ll be entering this summer’s NBA Draft.
For Brown, the one four-year player in the group, it was night to remember.
“It was very emotional,” Brown said. “I’m sure it’s going to hit me even harder a week from now. I thought about it a lot, this is going to be my last game ever in Gallagher-Iba. It’s kind of heartbreaking.
“I had fun my four years here, playing in front of that crowd. Playing with teammates who grew into brothers. Bonding with them every day. I’m going to miss it a lot.”
Brown scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, but didn’t end his GIA career with one of his signature dunks.
“I think I got enough,” he said.
Brown did enjoy a late dunk by Cox, the walk-on who once played on the scout team for the women’s squad.
“Oh, man, did you hear the crowd when he got that dunk?” Brown said. “I was so happy for him. Mason Cox, he’s a great guy. He’s going to step out in the big world and do some great things, engineering. I’m just happy for what he did for this program, how he came in and bonded with us. He just stuck with it every day, even though he wasn’t getting a lot of minutes. I was happy to see him get that dunk.”
