TACNA, Peru (AP) — Ecuador and Colombia joined Brazil on Friday as the teams to advance from Group B to the second round of South American Under-20 World Cup qualifying.
Ecuador defeated Bolivia 3-1 to finish with seven points, following Brazil which had already advanced with 10 points.
Paraguay needed to beat Colombia to advance, and looked like doing so when going ahead 3-1 early in the second half.
But Colombia fought back to make it 3-2 in the 68th when Michaal Ortega scored, and they then equalized in the 85th when Edwin Cardona converted a contentious penalty after teammate Didier Moreno was pulled down in the area.
Chilean referee Jorge Osorio was mobbed by Paraguay players after the final whistle and had to be protected by police wielding riot shields.
Ecuador clinched its spot with goals by Walter Chala, Marcos Caicedo and Edson Montano.
Argentina, Chile and Uruguay advanced from Group A on Thursday. Second-round play begins Monday with all six teams playing each other over five matches. The top four advance to the U20 World Cup later this year in Colombia, and the top two advance to the 2012 London Olympics.
The Monday schedule is: Argentina vs. Ecuador, Chile vs. Brazil, Uruguay vs. Colombia.
