Stock the key in United CEO's $13.4M compensation

Associated Press Published: April 27, 2012

BY THE NUMBERS: Jeffery Smisek, the CEO of United Continental Holdings Inc., got compensation last year that the airline company valued at $13.4 million, more than triple his 2010 deal.

TAKING STOCK: More than half of Smisek's compensation, $7.5 million, came from stock awards, including $4.4 in incentives for the merger of United and Continental in 2010.

SHARE ACTION: United Continental earned $840 million last year, but shareholders didn't get an immediate payoff. The shares fell 26 percent during the year, although they have gained most of it back in 2012.
