SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities have identified a body found off Baja California as the missing skipper of an American yacht destroyed during a race last month.

The San Diego County medical examiner's office on Monday identified the remains of 49-year-old Theo Mavromatis, who lived in Redondo Beach, Calif.

He died from blunt-force injuries.

A fishing boat crew discovered the body Sunday near the rugged Coronado Islands in Mexican waters south of San Diego.

Three crewmembers died and Mavromatis went missing when the yacht Aegean broke up near the islands during an annual overnight race from Newport Beach, Calif., to Ensenada, Mexico.

Investigators are trying to determine what happened. Theories include the possibility that the yacht hit rocks or was struck by a ship.
