RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes has been re-elected by a record margin and will remain in his role during the 2016 Olympics.

Paes had more than 2 million votes on Sunday, the most for a mayor in first-round elections in Rio. The victory also guarantees he will be in charge when the city hosts World Cup matches in 2014.

Paes says he is "the happiest man in the world" and "it's an honor to be Rio's mayor."

He dismisses the possibility of cutting his term short to run for governor in two years, saying "the city is going through a moment of transformation and I want to stay until the end. I want to be the Olympic mayor ... I will deliver the Olympic flag."
