ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Authorities say a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun was confiscated at Washington's Reagan National Airport last week.

The Transportation Security Administration says 59-year-old Elwood Kirkman of Fairfax, Va., mistakenly left the gun in his carry-on luggage and was detained when he tried to pass through a security checkpoint on Friday.

Kirkman was charged with a misdemeanor weapons offense under Virginia law. Authorities say Kirkman was allowed to continue his trip to Dallas.

There was no impact to airport operations.
