NEW YORK (AP) — An oil painting of a Cape Cod autumn scene by Edward Hopper has sold at auction for $9.6 million.

Christie's in New York sold "October on Cape Cod" on Wednesday. The buyer wasn't identified.

It's one of the last paintings by the American artist remaining in private hands.

It was offered for sale by a private American collector who's owned it for more than a decade.

Hopper, who died in 1967, had a home and studio on Cape Cod.

The large-scale 1946 painting shows a house and small barn from across a road as it might be observed from a passing vehicle.

Hopper's "Hotel Window" holds the record for the artist. It sold for $26.8 million in 2006 at Sotheby's.
