LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles City Council has delayed stepping into the fight over the troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant.
The Council was scheduled to consider a strongly worded resolution Friday that urges federal regulators to hold lengthy, court-like hearings before making a decision on Southern California Edison's plan to restart the Unit 2 reactor.
San Onofre — located between San Diego and Los Angeles — has been shut down since January after a tube break released a trace of radiation and excessive wear was found in hundreds of tubes in steam generators.
Council members voted 9-4 to temporarily shelve the resolution for more study, while asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and its Atomic Safety and Licensing Board to hold off on any decisions until the city considers the issue.
