SEMINOLE, Okla. (AP) — Four people were injured Wednesday when a Mediflight helicopter smacked the ground during an emergency landing in a field in Seminole.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. George Brown said the helicopter's pilot, a nurse and two medics were injured when it landed hard near Seminole's airport. No patients were on board, Brown said.

Brown said the helicopter had just taken off to pick up a patient in Okemah when it may have experienced engine failure and had an "extremely hard landing" shortly after 1 p.m. The helicopter was stationed at the Seminole airport, about 55 miles east of Oklahoma City, and came down northeast of the airport.

Brown said the pilot may have suffered a broken leg but that the extent of injuries to the four occupants was not immediately known.

Brown said the helicopter sustained damage to the landing gear and rear rotor. Live video broadcast by Oklahoma City television stations showed the crumpled craft sitting idle in a grassy field surrounded by emergency equipment.

Other medical helicopters took the injured to Oklahoma City-area hospitals, including the University of Oklahoma Medical Center.

The patrol says the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and plan investigations into the emergency landing.
