NEW YORK (AP) — Stock indexes are edging higher in another day of indecisive trading on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 18 points to 14,632 shortly before noon Tuesday. The index alternated between small gains and losses in early trading. The Dow is up 11.6 percent from the start of the year.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose a point at 1,564. The Nasdaq composite was up a point at 3,224.

Alcoa, traditionally the first company in the Dow to report results, edged down 5 cents to $8.34 after reporting earnings late Monday.

J.C. Penney plunged 11 percent to $14.20 a day after the company fired its CEO and brought back his predecessor to lead the troubled department store chain. Mike Ullman was CEO for seven years until November 2011.
