The Deer Creek School District teacher of the year teaches six lessons a day in the media center and hopes her students are as excited about the topics as she is, Godfrey said.
"It's so rewarding to hear the kids being so excited about learning and reading,” Godfrey said. "The days of the ‘Shh, this is the library, don't talk,' are very gone.”
Deer Creek School District administrators announced this week that Godfrey is the district's teacher of the year. Godfrey now will compete for the state Teacher of the Year honor. The state winner will be announced in September.
"You never see Mandy behind a desk checking out books,” said Debbie Straughn, Deer Creek Elementary School principal.
Instead, Godfrey is interacting with the students.
And students always find something interesting in the library whether it be books — which Godfrey does help students with — or the banana splits she made to illustrate the different parts of the library, Straughn said.
Godfrey often dresses as characters from books or transforms the library into a beach or glacier for book fairs, Straughn said. "She's just so creative,” Straughn said. Besides her creativity with the students, Godfrey also is known for her ability to learn and help other teachers, Straughn said.
"There is not one person in my building who doesn't like and respect her,” Straughn said.
Godfrey said she wants students to learn more about their classroom subjects while in the media center, and she coordinates her lessons with teachers throughout the building to match up curriculum.
"It was great for me to be recognized as a librarian and as a teacher,” Godfrey said. "Everything I do is just an extension of the classroom.”
Godfrey said she wants students to know they can learn outside of their school, like at an art exhibit. "My goal is for them to be comfortable finding information anywhere,” she said.
