Arts center show focuses on hospice care photos

Sarah Molina Published: October 10, 2003

City Arts Center will host a special black-and-white photo exhibit from Oct. 16 to Jan. 3 featuring pictures of people in hospice care.

The exhibit, An Enduring Spirit: Photographs of Persons in Hospice Care, is sponsored by Good Shepherd Hospice. The pictures were taken by a father and daughter photography team, John M. Seward and Melanie Seward.

The two photographers began the project as unpaid volunteers.

"People think that if someone is in hospice care, they're done for. That's not always true," John Seward said. "We hope that people will better understand that hospice is about living your final days well."

Melanie Seward said, "Even the people who can't talk, through their eyes we can see the appreciation that they are glad to have us there. It made me realize how good it was for me to be in that environment."

The City Arts Center, 3000 General Pershing Blvd., is at State Fair Park.
