Asking for some reasonable limitations

The alarming frequency and magnitude of gun-related massacres needs to be addressed at once. In the aftermath of the Newtown, Conn., tragedy, President Obama promised “meaningful action” and appointed Vice President Joe Biden to assemble a task-force to formulate, by next January, proposals to address this problem. He also indicated the need to reinstate the ban on assault rifles, ban the sale of large-capacity ammunition magazines and closing loopholes of background checks in gun shows.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, a member of the National Rifle Association, said, “It is time for all sides in the gun-policy debate to move beyond the political rhetoric and begin an honest discussion about reasonable restrictions on guns.” Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, advocated armed security guards in all schools. This is a step in the right direction but hardly enough; we witnessed shootings in malls, theaters, parking lots, drive-by shootings, children killing themselves and others, etc. The fact that in the past 15 years boys 11 to 17 years old were involved in six gun-related homicides, including two massacres, indicates that some licensed gun-owners aren't securing their weapons properly. Mandatory gun-locks and/or securing weapons properly at home should be enforced.

The claim that guns don't kill, that deranged individuals do, applies only to deranged people with guns. Nobody advocates a complete ban on firearms, only some reasonable limitations. Let's act expeditiously.
