The Alabama State Hornets are already facing a crucial game in the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division standings.
The Hornets (2-2, 2-1 SWAC) will take on surprising East Division co-leader Alcorn State (3-1, 2-0) at 5 p.m. Saturday at ASU Stadium. The Braves, who are trying to snap a streak of six consecutive losing seasons, upset defending SWAC champion Arkansas-Pine Bluff last week.
A loss Saturday would effectively put the Hornets 2½ games behind Alcorn State, since the Braves would own the head-to-head tiebreaker.
"Coach (Jay) Hopson has done a real good job with his team," ASU coach Reggie Barlow said. "I think he is finally getting his guys into that program, and they are a team that is playing at a high level with a lot of confidence right now."
Alcorn's only loss was against FBS opponent Mississippi State. The Braves' three wins have come by an average score of 40-19.
"It will be a challenge for us to compete against a really good team that is playing with a lot of confidence," Barlow said.
ASU has won two in a row since dropping its first two games by a total of nine points. The Hornets were coming off a 52-21 win over Grambling State when linebacker Daerius Washington was named SWAC defensive player of the week.
West Alabama vs. Concordia-Selma, 6 p.m.
West Alabama (2-1) looks to keep its high-scoring offense going against Concordia-Selma (0-2), which had to cancel its game against Miles last week after the team bus caught fire en route to the stadium.
UWA recorded 637 total yards last week in a 45-3 victory over Florida Tech led by quarterback Kyle Caldwell and running back Javae Swindle.
"We are executing at a high level on offense," UWA coach Will Hall said. "We ran it well, threw it well and played fast."
Alabama A&M vs. Texas Southern, 6 p.m.
Alabama A&M (1-3, 1-1 SWAC) will try snapping a three-game losing streak when it faces Texas Southern (0-3, 0-2).
Brandon Eldemire and Barrington Scott of Alabama A&M combined for 282 rushing yards and two touchdowns against Prairie View A&M, and quarterback Jaymason Lee threw for 224 yards and two scores.
