Fatal accidents on Grand Lake

• July 30, 2006: Murray McGarvey, 35, of Brunswick, Ga., died when a boat driven by John Special, of Stillwater, hit the boat McGarvey was sitting in. The latter boat was driven by Jason Bandy, of Tulsa. Both drivers allegedly had been drinking. Special was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, and both men were charged with negligent homicide. The charges eventually were dismissed.

• July 29, 2012: The body of Monte Price, 39, of Jay, was found in 50 feet of water in the Duck Creek arm of Grand Lake. A Grand River Dam Authority report said alcohol and excessive speed contributed to the crash. Roger Shane Carroll, Jay Middle School principal, was acquitted in March of manslaughter and reckless operation of a vessel. He resigned his position effective June 30.

• May 14: Rachel Nicole Swetnam, 21, of Grove, and William Lewis “Trey” Varner III, 21, of Texarkana, Ark., died when the boat they were passengers in hit an unoccupied houseboat. A preliminary report shows alcohol, drugs and speed were among contributing factors in the crash. John Deselms, of Tulsa, was arrested on a complaint of operating a vessel under the influence. has disabled the comments for this article.
