As the 1986 PGA champion, Tway was among the elite players on tour before a swing change and a supreme lack of confidence knocked him off his feet in 1992.
Verplank was there to prop up Tway.
Around that same time, Verplank struggled to stay healthy and endured his first elbow surgery in 1992. He returned to the tour in 1994, but required a second surgery two years later.
Tway was there to prop up Verplank.
So intertwined were their struggles and successes, each was voted as the tour's comeback player of the year — Tway in 1995 and Verplank in 1998.
Just two years ago, they stood side-by-side in career earnings. But lately Verplank has enjoyed considerably more success than his close friend.
Verplank now stands 15th all-time with $20.3 million in earnings. Tway is 37th at $14.9 million.
Verplank has finished out of the top 50 in season money only once in the last 10 seasons.
