AT&T Bricktown Ballpark keeps games at home in OKC Published: August 22, 2010

When New York art dealer Jeffrey Loria owned the then-Oklahoma City 89ers, it was clear the team needed a new stadium to be able to survive as a Triple-A franchise.

So when Loria, who now owns the Florida Marlins, put the team up for sale in August 1993, the city also made plans to build a downtown stadium to keep the team here.

The AT&T Bricktown Ballpark has been open more than 12 years.

The ballpark was the first downtown MAPS project to begin construction after Oklahoma City voters passed the MAPS sales tax in December 1993.

Construction on the stadium, which replaced All-Sports Stadium at State Fair Park, began in August 1996 and the stadium opened in front of a packed house on April 16, 1998.

With the move, the team was renamed the Oklahoma RedHawks. The team is now known as the Oklahoma City RedHawks.

While the RedHawks are the primary draw to the park, there are plenty of other events held there.

In 2002, the stadium hosted the Triple-A All-Star Game and since 2006 has been the site of a one-game playoff for the Triple-A championship between the Pacific Coast League and the International League.

Bricktown Ballpark has hosted the Big 12 Baseball Tournament for 11 of the 13 years since it opened and every year since 2005.

In early June, it was announced the tournament would remain there through 2014.

OU and OSU have annually played a game of their Bedlam baseball series at the park.

During the Christmas season, a snow tubing hill is constructed on the field, taking tubers from the upper deck to the field surface.

In 2008, the ballpark hosted a Dave Matthews Band concert. Other concerts also have been held at the ballpark.
