A man who brandished a knife and told two Payless employees, “Don't freak out, I'm robbing you,” got away with shoes but no cash during a robbery attempt Monday afternoon in southwest Oklahoma City, police said.

Police arrested Nicholas Lee Werner, 19, on a complaint of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon near the store at 1413 W Interstate 240 Service Road.

Two cashiers told police a robber put on a pair of canvas sneakers before demanding cash around 2:30 p.m. The cashiers told him they could not open the cash register drawer and he left the store, wearing shoes he did not pay for, the cashiers said.

Police took Werner into custody as he walked near SW 77 Terrace and S Kentucky Avenue.
