Arms museum celebrates 40 years

CLAREMORE — Wayne McCombs is executive

director of the J.M. Davis Arms & Historical

Museum in Claremore, which is celebrating its 40th year of operation. McCombs said they were uncertain what the economy might mean in terms of attendance. But, they’ve been pleased with what they’ve seen. For example, from May through August, they had 3,000 more visitors than a year ago in the same time span. "People were staying closer to home on vacation, plus gas prices were steady,” McCombs said. However, they also have about 80 international visitors each month, he said. This includes visitors from

Germany, France, Canada, England and other countries.McCombs said many of their European visitors take the Route 66 trip. "They fly into

Chicago and rent vehicles,” he said. "Many rent motorcycles or muscle cars and drive 66 to Los Angeles and fly back to Europe.”
