ARKOMA — The police chief's voice shakes when he talks about an all-terrain vehicle accident that killed a father and 2-year-old son Friday.

"It's all still just a big blur,” Thomas Lenard said Monday.

Search crews spent all day Saturday searching for the bodies of Joshua Owenby, 27, of Arkoma and Brecken Owenby. Authorities said they were riding a four-wheeler along trails near the Poteau River in Arkoma on Friday when their vehicle went over a bluff and into the river 30 to 40 feet below.

Police found the four-wheeler upside down in the river Friday evening. Neither Owenby nor his son were wearing helmets, Lenard said.

What happened
Lenard said there was evidence Owenby accelerated to get the four-wheeler out of a small hole near the bluff and went over and into the river.

"You can see where his tire was spinning,” said Lenard. "He was stuck.”

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol found Joshua Owenby's body early Saturday in the river at the accident site, Lenard said.

Authorities with the Sebastian County, Ark., sheriff's department found the toddler's body about 4:30 p.m. Saturday about a half-mile from the accident site.

"He had floated against some brush on the bank,” Lenard said.

Police and fire crews and emergency management officials from Arkoma, Pocola, Roland and Panama assisted with the search, as well as the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and sheriff's departments from Sebastian and Crawford counties in Arkansas.
