Oklahoma City-based psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips released this week a trippy cover of The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” as a warmup to their New Year’s Eve show tonight in Colorado.

The Lips will ring in the New Year playing the second of a two-night stand at Aspen’s Belly Up club. According to thefutureheart.com, the band will play a set of John Lennon-penned Beatles tunes.

As you can see from the rehearsal video, the set is expected to include “Tomorrow Never Knows,” ”Come Together,” “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except for Me and My Monkey,” “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” “Across the Universe” and ”Dear Prudence,” along with “Lucy in the Sky.”

Even better, the Lips’ NYE show will be broadcast on SiriusXM Radio Jam On (channel 29) tonight – technically, in the wee hours of tomorrow – with rebroadcasts Wednesday and Thursday, according to thefutureheart.com. Here is the broadcast schedule:

Wednesday 1/1 at 1 a.m. (2 a.m. Eastern)

Wednesday 1/1 at 4 p.m. (5 p.m. Eastern)

Thursday 1/2 at 11 a.m. (noon Eastern)

The Lips traditionally have made their NYE shows even more special and elaborate than their usual concert extravaganzas. From 2007-2011, the band played hometown New Year’s Eve Freakouts here in Oklahoma City, and the they rang in 2010 with their first performance of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” (featuring Stardeath and White Dwarfs). They debuted their own pivotal album “The Soft Bulletin” live in its entirety the following year, and in 2011-12, they teamed with Yoko Ono and her band for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day shows.

As previously reported, the Lips’ OKC freak-rock kindred Stardeath and White Dwarfs (Stardeath frontman Dennis Coyne is the nephew of Lips frontman Wayne Coyne) are continuing the New Year’s Eve Freakout tradition  here in Oklahoma City at 8 tonight at the Bricktown Music Hall, 103 Flaming Lips Alley.

Stardeath will be playing David Bowie’s 1972 concept album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.”

The show also will feature Tyson Meade of The Chainsaw Kittens, New Fumes and Deus Eyeslow. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/BricktownMusicHall or www.ticketstorm.com.
