Authorities identify deputies involved in fatal Okmulgee County shooting
Authorities have named two deputies who are on administrative leave after they were involved in a shooting that killed a Morris artist and teacher.
MORRIS — Authorities released the names Thursday of two Okmulgee County deputies who were involved in a shooting this week that killed a local artist who taught at Morris Public Schools.
Chief Investigator Michael Stacy and Investigator Smokey Patchin are on administrative leave while the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation looks into the shooting, which happened about 9:25 a.m. Wednesday.
Deputies were called to 17401 Bristlecone Road, home of Robert W. McMurtry, 61. The caller told dispatchers McMurtry was suicidal.
According to a statement from the Okmulgee County sheriff's office, McMurtry approached the deputies carrying a machete and appearing distraught.
McMurtry was shot and killed.
OSBI agents will turn over the results of their investigation to the district attorney, who will determine whether the shooting was justified.
According to McMurtry's website, he earned a bachelor's degree in English with minors in art and sociology from the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in Chickasha.
He won numerous awards for his paintings, which depicted both historical and contemporary American Indian themes.
He also was the author of four books.
McMurtry taught art at both Morris Middle School and Morris High School, school officials said.
