Nearly a month after a 9-year-old girl died when the sport utility vehicle she was riding in rolled over on a Bryan County road, authorities have not said who owned the SUV or why a 13-year-old was driving it when it crashed.

Abigail Jones, of Colbert, was declared dead at the scene of the wreck about 3:25 p.m. Sept. 29 a mile east and 3½ miles south of Colbert, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The SUV, driven by a 13-year-old boy, was traveling north at an unsafe speed when it ran off the road and rolled over. Two other juveniles also were in the SUV.

No one used seat belt

No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt. Abigail was thrown from the SUV, which landed on top of her.

The patrol routinely releases the names of juveniles involved in fatality and injury wrecks, but officials have refused to identify the driver of the SUV or the other children who were riding in it, citing federal privacy concerns.

Trooper Betsy Randolph, a patrol spokeswoman, said the crash still is under investigation and no more information will be released until an official collision report is finished.

“This child and every victim in a fatal motor-vehicle crash deserves our very best effort to get all the facts and ensure they are correct before we wrap everything up,” Randolph said.

No information has been released indicating why a 13-year-old was behind the wheel or whether the parents of the juveniles knew where their kids were.

No arrests have been made in the case. has disabled the comments for this article.
