Ayanna Najuma: Each day is a blessing

Ayanna Najuma: Welcome the New Year with thankfulness
BY AYANNA NAJUMA, For The Oklahoman Published: December 30, 2013

I wonder, when people say, “Have a blessed day,” do they know that each day is blessed? When you awaken each morning and have oxygen flowing through your lungs, you are blessed. You are still in the game of life. Your day has started with a slam dunk. It's another opportunity to be of service to the planet, to do God's work.

My life is based upon the choices I make. This is a blessing bestowed upon each and every one of us, and one that I chose to accept with open arms. This blessing has allowed me to be the Ayanna that I am today.

One of the choices each of us has to make is the choice to love ourselves. This can express itself in many ways. Self-love can be recognizing ways to add value to the lives of others. It can be one's ability to have regard for others' happiness. Having regard for others' happiness will allow you to have the happiness needed to live a fulfilling and rewarding life.

Love for oneself can also be expressed through humility, compassion, creativity or even confidence — especially when used to step outside one's self and see the needs of others.

As we start 2014, it is important that we take a moment to reflect on all the beautiful, amazing and exceptional components that make us the fabulous individuals that we are. As we look into a new year, we can remember the variables that have helped us step outside our comfort zone in the past and use what we've learned to step positively forward into the future.

Isn't it great knowing that we can wake up every morning and have the opportunity to be the best we can be, just because? Now is your opportunity to make 2014 your best year. Happy New Year! The best is right now!
