Regarding “Coburn fires back at critics over gun vote” (News, April 12): Widespread background checks now proposed in Congress will keep legal gun owners safer by giving us a firepower advantage. The stock of illegal guns is constantly being diminished. Police confiscate guns used in crimes and murderers throw guns in the river. Plus, guns break and criminals can't risk a gunsmith running the numbers. So why don't criminals run out of guns? Remember, every illegal gun was once a legal gun. Some legal guns get in criminal hands when they're stolen or given by misguided souls. But 80 percent become illegal through the sales of legal guns to felons without background checks. When background checks start slowing the flow into the black market, attrition will shrink the pool; the firepower advantage will slowly shift to legal gun owners. All law-abiding citizens will be safer when Congress shuts down criminal access to legal guns.
