1 pound asparagus, trimmed

12 ounces bacon

Salt and pepper to taste

• Light a fire on half the grill. If using gas, light half the burners.

• Wrap 2 to 3 slices of bacon around bundles of 4 to 5 asparagus. Cook over direct heat 1 to 2 minutes, until bacon begins to crisp up. Move to indirect heat, cover and cook an additional 5 to 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, and serve.

• Cook's note: If you want to turn this into a fully vegetarian dish, lose the bacon and toss the asparagus in vinaigrette.
