MIAMI (AP) — There will be no release on bail before trial for a Bolivian National Police official accused of trying to shake down a Bolivian businessman living in Miami.
A federal magistrate judge on Friday ordered 42-year-old Mario Fabricio Ormachea Aliaga to remain jailed because he is a risk of fleeing and has no ties to the local community. No trial date has been set.
Ormachea is charged with trying to extort $30,000 from Humberto Roca, former head of a Bolivian airline. The FBI says Ormachea offered to have Bolivian criminal charges dropped against Roca in exchange for the cash. Ormachea has denied the charge.
Bolivian officials say Ormachea has been removed as the second-ranking officer in the police anticorruption unit.
Roca claims political persecution and is seeking asylum in the U.S.
