Former Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield, who wanted to transfer to Oklahoma after starting seven games for the Red Raiders this season, was denied eligibility in an appeal to Texas Tech on Friday.

Mayfield, a freshman walk-on for the Red Raiders this year, had to appeal after Texas Tech initially restricted his ability to transfer anywhere in the Big 12.

Now, if Mayfield chose to go to OU he would not only have to sit out next season but would lose a year of eligibility as well.

Mayfield told ESPN.com earlier this week that if his appeal was denied, that he would consider going elsewhere.

It seems his chances of earning playing time at Oklahoma in the near future would be a longshot. The Sooners return three players who saw time at quarterback this season Trevor KnightBlake Bell and Kendal Thompson. Plus they have Cody Thomas, who redshirted this season, and Edmond Santa Fe’s Justice Hansen is beginning class in Norman this semester.

Mayfield told ESPN.com that he decided to transfer to Oklahoma because he grew up a Sooners fan and attended games in Norman about twice a year before he started playing high school football.
