Banning guns won't work in America

With the increase in gun violence in Oklahoma City, particularly the event after a Thunder playoff game, one has to look at where the young man accused of shooting indiscriminately into a crowd got the gun. Was it from a lawful citizen? Was it stolen? Could this tragedy have been averted if the youth were not troubled to begin with? Regarding the parole officer who was shot with his own weapon, is this something new that parole officers openly carry a loaded firearm? This makes no sense.

A person has the right to defend himself with deadly force under different scenarios. A law-abiding citizen licensed to carry a concealed weapon carries his gun under his shirt and happens to reach up to retrieve an item and his gun is exposed. He's no longer carrying a concealed weapon. The open-carry law would cover this.

Some want bans on guns. Banning guns, concealed or open, will work just as well as prohibition did for booze. Guns are part of the American culture; we can't and shouldn't try to change our culture.

Bill Fiaccone, Oklahoma City
